Provisions under the new Alabama Liability Car Insurance Law go into effect on January 1, 2013. You must have proof of drivers license and liability insurance to renew your tag.
ALABAMA VEHICLE REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:
The Alabama Department of Revenue in Montgomery sets all vehicle values, all title regulations and all other regulations regarding motor vehicle laws. These laws and regulations get their basis from the laws passed by the Alabama legislature. Alabama does not title watercraft.
You must be a resident of Autauga County to have vehicles registered here. You have 20 calendar days from the date of purchase to register your vehicle; failure to do so will result in a $15.00 penalty plus interest. The Probate Office accepts the following methods of payment only: cash, check, and money orders. We do not accept out of state checks, unless you are an active member of the military.
To register a vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 lbs., or more, a completed Schedule 2290 form (obtainable from the Internal Revenue Service) must be presented at the Probate Department.
IN ORDER TO REGISTER A VEHICLE THAT IS TITLED FOR THE FIRST TIME THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED:
(a) An original title properly executed by the seller to the new owner (new owner must be present) or
(b) Title application completely filled out to the new owner or
(c) Manufacturers Certificate of Origin (new owner must be present) or
(d) Title in new owners name.
(e) Effective October 1, 2015 all titles will need to reflect the owner’s legal name as shown on their Driver’s License ID. This includes financed vehicles.
When transferring ownership on a title, the purchaser(s) must be present to sign the title application unless they give someone
Power of Attorney for them.
Vehicles with a lien require the following: copy of original title, lien holders complete names and mailing addresses, and the loan account number and loan date.
2. BILL OF SALE
(a) Cost of vehicle and date of sale
(b) Full description of the vehicle
(c) Complete name and address of the new owner
(d) Trade-in allowance, if any
(e) A breakdown of the sales tax paid. (This is required when purchased from a dealer. It must show the percent and amount of State, County and City tax paid. If all sales tax has not been paid we collect a percentage based on location of residency)
(f) Signature of buyer and seller
According to Alabama law a vehicle must have a minimum of liability insurance on it before it may be registered. The signature placed upon the registration receipt will indicate that the information shown on the receipt is correct and that the vehicle is correct and that the vehicle is properly insured. Proof of insurance document is required.
4. DRIVER LICENSE NUMBER
Alabama law requires the owner as listed on the title/registration to provide his/her drivers license or non-driver identification number. Companies registering vehicles are required to provide their federal employer identification number (FEIN)
ALL VEHICLES THAT ARE OLDER THAN 35 YEARS REQUIRE #2, #3 AND #4 AS SHOWN ABOVE.
Anytime the Probate Office applies for a first time Alabama title on a vehicle, the vehicle will need to be here for inspection. Vehicles will not be inspected after 3:30 or in inclement weather.

- Alabama Metal Tag Number, and
- Alabama Driver License Number or Alabama ID Card Number, with Valid Expiration Date, and

Each of the first three items above display a registrant’s renewal month and serve as renewal reminders for vehicle owners. An Alabama resident who moves to our county from another Alabama county, will be required to register his vehicle in Limestone County during his annual renewal month. The current tag and tax registration receipt copy, or the courtesy mail renewal notice received from the previous county, should be brought to our office for registration in this county. Each registered owner or co-owner should also bring their valid Alabama driver license or photocopy to comply with Act 2011-688 related to Mandatory Liability Insurance compliance. Proof of insurance will be required by evidence that includes the provider’s NAIC, policy number, and current effective date.
The best time to renew your tag in person is between the 11th and 25th of the month. Mondays and Fridays are high activity days in the office, along with the first working day following holidays.
