Standard and Disability Access License Plates

The standard license plate undergoes a design change every five years. The current license plate design was provided for distribution beginning January 1, 2022 and replaced the previous design “Sweet Home Alabama.“

Individuals seeking disability parking privileges for the first time must obtain the signature of a licensed physician verifying that the individual qualifies for the parking credentials prior to receiving them. The Application for Disability Access Parking Privileges form must be completed by a licensed physician before a handicap placard and/or handicap license plate is issued for first-time applicants. https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/MVR-32-6-230-12-21-fillable.pdf

The removable windshield placard is issued free and will expire at the end of the qualifying individual’s registration renewal month in 2027.

The registration fee for the handicap license plate is the same as that of a standard license plate – $23 annually, plus a county issuance fee. The license plate is renewed annually.

“Commitment to Purchase” Applications for New Specialty Plates

Additional organizations may apply for a new distinctive specialty license plate by applying with the Alabama Department of Revenue. An application will be forwarded to the Alabama Legislative Oversight Committee (LOC) who grants approval for an organization to enter the procedures for obtaining the required “commitment to purchase” applications from county licensing officials throughout Alabama.

Each “commitment to purchase” application by Alabama registrants is supported by the prepayment of $ 50.00 per license plate commitment. If the required number of “commitment to purchase” are received, then the license plates will be ordered and delivered to county offices for distribution. The sponsoring organization will be responsible for notifying their supporters.

The sponsoring organizations must reach sufficient commitments within 12 months following LOC approval. The commitments fall within two categories: 1. Specialty plate design, 1,000 commitments, or 2. Generic decal design, 250 commitments.

Collegiate License Plates

The issuance of collegiate plates includes an additional $50.00 for the school to apply to their education trust fund. Proceeds from the fund is applied to scholarships for qualified students in Alabama. The following is a list of available distinctive tags in the collegiate series.  The annual license fee is $ 73.00 and the county issuance fee is $ 1.25.  Approximately $ 48.00 of the license fee is remitted to the school as a contribution for scholarship awards.

Military License Plates

Applicants for veteran of foreign wars commemorative license plates must provide their supporting documents to the local office of the Department of Veteran Affairs for certification. The issuance of the metal plate includes an additional $3.00.  When registration is validated by decals only, the standard fee applies.

Prestige License Plates

Many organization and collegiate license plates may be personalized with a unique message that serves as a substitute for a registration number.

The personalized message must be unique with all combined messages in the statewide database maintained by the Alabama Department of Revenue.  The maximum spaces on the standard plate is seven.  Some license plates are limited to five spaces.

If you wish to renew your registration and apply for a prestige plate with a personalized message, then you may reserve your personalized message online with the Alabama Department of Revenue, (Personalized License Plate Reservation).     You may use the same sight to search for available messages.

If you wish to reserve, there will be a charge of $2.00 to your bankcard.  After confirmation, be sure to finalize the transaction by registration in the county license office.
