This office is operated under the supervision of ALEA and not the Autauga County Probate Office.

Persons applying for a first time driver license or for an Alabama Identification Card must provide two forms of identification. Contact the Drivers License Examiner for a list of acceptable forms of identification. Persons applying for a drivers license will be administered a written exam, an eye exam, and a road test. Persons moving into Alabama from another State may surrender the out-of-State license and take an eye exam. Persons wishing to obtain an identification card (including those with suspended Alabama Drivers License) must first apply at the Drivers License Examiner Office. An administration fee of $5.00 is required for each application. The fee for a license or identification card is $36.25. A temporary license or ID card, with a picture, will be issued. The original will be mailed at a later date from the Alabama Department of Public Safety. Persons not receiving their license within 60 days should contact the Department of Public Safety at 334-242-4400.

Driver License Process for Teens who have completed a Dept. Of Education driver education course and passed the basic road test

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has partnered with the Alabama State Department of Education to streamline the driver license process for teens who have completed a Department of Education driver education course and passed the basic road test with an instructor.

Designed to save time and eliminate a second visit to an ALEA Driver License Examining Office, the process no longer requires a parent to take their child for a road test before their learner permit may be exchanged for a driver license. Instead, beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year, information on a student who has completed SDE’s driver’s education and passed the road test with an instructor will be transmitted automatically to ALEA’s Driver License Division for a Graduated Driver License. On the morning of the student’s 16th birthday, ALEA automatically will remove the Y restriction from their license if they have held their permit for at least six months. Rather than make a second in-person visit to an ALEA Driver License Office to present an “SDE yellow card,” the student and parent may go to www.alea.gov to place an online order for the teen’s Stage II driver license by selecting “Duplicate.”

License Re-Instatement

Persons with a suspended drivers license must apply to the Department of Public Safety for re-instatement. Upon payment of re-instatement fees, the applicant may obtain a duplicate drivers license at any Probate Office in Alabama with the letter of re-instatement as well as two forms of identification.

 Motorized Vessel License

Persons 12 years and older may operate a motorized vessel on Alabama waterways. You must be licensed. The vessel class “V” must be added to your license if you intend to operate a motorized vessel. You can do this at the Drivers License Examiner office at:
